First and foremost, what exactly is hail and how does it form?

Hail is a form of precipitation that happens when thunderstorms' upward air currents lift rain droplets into the higher level of clouds. Temperatures are much below zero degrees Fahrenheit. These raindrops break away and produce ice in a variety of sizes. This sequence may repeat several times before free falling to the earth, depending on the size of the storm. This is what determines the size of the hail detected.

Nothing on your property is safe when hail strikes. Although hailstorms may cause significant damage, the extent of the damage varies widely. Various roofing materials are impacted differently and should be evaluated by a specialist. The next section goes into detail on the impact of hailstorms and how to identify damage caused by such storms.

  1. Wind direction and speed can change during a hailstorm. Wind factors can influence the location and severity of hail hits.

  2. Size and density — The size of the hail might impact the extent of damage to your property if any. A hail impact can range in size from a pea to a softball. Hail, more often than not, does not have smooth edges.

  3. Material type - Hail has a varying influence on different types of construction materials. Where hail-damaged aluminum siding, gutters, and/or asphalt shingles the most, it breaks vinyl siding or wood shake shingles. The age of the material also has a significant impact on the degree of damage.

  4. House placement - Neighboring structures and natural barriers, such as tree cover, diminish hail's capacity to inflict damage.

How Does Roofing Hail Damage Appear?

When hit by hail, shingles can respond in a variety of ways. Composition and Asphalt Shingles are often attacked at random, with no discernible pattern. Because of the effect on the granules, they are often black in color. When revealing the mat may appear to be glossy due to the use of fiberglass. Hail tends to split wood shingles, leaving indentations at the seams.

The presence of one or more of these may suggest that the homeowner needs a full roof replacement rather than a simple roof repair. Here are a few things to keep an eye out for.

Other Hail-Indicated Areas Around the Property:

  1. Inspect the gutters, gutter screens, and downspouts for dents.

This is not always the case, but if a roof has severe hail damage on top, the gutters will often have some impact damage as well.

  1. Check the exterior, windows, and window screens for damage.

You should also look for dents or dings in the home's exterior and windows. These are the areas where, if the roof sustains major damage, these items will very certainly sustain damage as well.

  1. Metal fascia on eaves and gables frequently shows traces of hail damage effect.

  2. Inspect air conditioners and other outside goods for storm damage.
